Fed: Swans says Turnbull has case to answer over "smear"

CANBERRA, Aug 4 AAP - Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull has some serious questions
to answer over his attempted "smear" of the prime minister and himself, says Treasurer
Wayne Swan.

"I think what we should be looking at here is the extraordinary smear made on the prime
minister and myself by the opposition leader," he told reporters in Sydney.

The auditor-general, in a report tabled on Tuesday, has cleared both Mr Rudd and Mr
Swan of making any inappropriate representations on behalf of a car dealer friend of the
prime minister's for assistance in the OzCar scheme.

"When the Australian people expected our national parliament to be focused on jobs
and to be focused on building prosperity beyond the global recession, Mr Turnbull and
the Liberals were solely focused on smear," Mr Swan said.

"Now, as the prime minister and I said from the very beginning, our actions were absolutely
appropriate and the report today confirms that."

Mr Turnbull needed to explain why he put pressure on the Treasury official in charge
of the OzCar scheme, Godwin Grech, Mr Swan said.

Mr Grech claimed he was placed under "enormous pressure" in a meeting with Mr Turnbull
and Liberal Senate deputy leader Eric Abetz to provide evidence of the email allegedly
linking Mr Rudd's office to representations on behalf of the dealer John Grant.
